7 Best DeFi Trading Platforms in Kenya (Updated 2025)

  1. Aave
  2. Fantom
  3. Ardana
  4. Synthetix
  5. Polkadot
  6. Uniswap

What is Decentralized Finance?

👉 Blockchain technology is used in decentralized finance. It is a secure ledger or database, and dApps are used for transaction processing and blockchain operation—the blockchain documents transactions inside blocks, which other users then verify.

👉 The block is closed and encrypted if these verifiers concur on a transaction. Then, a new block containing the preceding block’s contents is generated.

👉 The blocks are “chained” together by the information in each subsequent block, thus the term blockchain. Therefore, there is no way to modify a blockchain since the data in previous blocks cannot be altered without affecting later ones.

👉 This notion, in conjunction with other security protocols, offers blockchain security. Peer-to-peer (P2P) financial transactions are one of DeFi’s fundamental foundations. In a P2P DeFi transaction, two people agree to exchange bitcoin for goods or services without a third-party intermediary.

1. Aave

Aave

👉 Aave is a decentralized finance (DeFi) system that eliminates the need for a centralized lender or borrower in the lending and borrowing cryptocurrencies and RWAs. Instead, they receive interest on loans and incur costs whenever they take out a loan.

👉 Aave was first built on top of the Ethereum network. All network tokens are ERC20 tokens that leverage the Ethereum blockchain to conduct transactions. Aave is available on several exchanges, such as Avalanche, Fantom, and Harmony brands.

👉 A DAO, or decentralized autonomous organization, is used by the protocol. Those who own AAVE tokens have control and a say in how it is run and managed.

👉 The stablecoins Tether, DAI, USD Coin, and the Gemini dollar are just some of the 30 Ethereum-based assets that may be pooled on Aave right now. Avalanche, Fantom, Harmony, and Polygon are just a few examples of alternative marketplaces.

👉 Property, freight bills, and payment advances are just some of the real-world assets that may be pooled with Aave. Centrifuge, a Centrifield partner, assists traditional companies in tokenizing their internal processes to participate in these pools.

👉 When an asset is tokenized, Kenyans can buy (or use as collateral for) tokens that act and pay out like bonds. Consequently, real-world enterprises may utilize these assets to get loans.

👉 In the initial stages of the decentralized financial system, if you needed to borrow an asset, you had to locate someone on the platform willing to lend it at a price and on conditions agreed upon by both parties.

👉 On the other hand, Aave completely sidesteps the peer-to-peer lending model in favour of what amounts to a pool-to-peer model. As a result, Kenyans could finance “liquidity pools” with digital assets, which the protocol can use to make loans.

👉 New aTokens are distributed to anybody who “provides liquidity” by depositing tokens into a pool. As a result, if you contribute DAI to the liquidity pool, you will get aDai in return (the “a” stands for “Aave”).

👉 Interest and a share of the platform’s flash loans will be distributed to aToken holders. You will not make much money adding tokens to a pool that is already flush with cash.

👉 However, you will earn more if you are depositing tokens that the system needs. Similarly, borrowers’ interest rates change based on the loan being taken out.

2. Fantom

Fantom

👉 Fantom is a permissionless, open-source, decentralized blockchain with high throughput. It was designed to facilitate the usage of smart contracts for decentralized applications.

👉 For this purpose, it has numerous characteristics, which will be described in further detail below. Additionally, it has its own native ERC-20 coin. Fantom’s definition is basic, designed when the DeFi market became more prominent.

👉 When the network was congested, many Ethereum users were irritated by the hefty gas prices. However, several new networks with much reduced network fees emerged during this time.

👉 The network has connected with a few of the largest solution providers on the market, such as Chainlink, Ren, Band Protocol, the Graph, and Waves.

👉 Fantom thinks that its ultra-high-speed and high-performance platform may serve as the IT infrastructure backbone for burgeoning smart cities.

👉 To conduct 300,000 transactions per second and have the capacity to interact across various service providers, Fantom thinks it is the answer to safely storing enormous quantities of data.

👉 Fantom intends to do this by making it accessible to stakeholders’ data-driven smart contracts and dApp adoption for smart cities.

👉 The Fantom team foresees widespread use of the platform, from public utilities to smart home systems to healthcare, education, transportation, resource management, and environmental sustainability initiatives.

👉 As evidence of Fantom’s adaptability, the team was able to build Fantom DeFi-capable swiftly. As a result, Fantom claims to be the comprehensive DeFi solution for all users.

👉 The EVM-compatible blockchain used by Fantom enables users to generate, trade, lend, and borrow digital assets straight from their wallets. And all of this comes with near-zero transaction costs and rapid processing.

3. Ardana

Ardana

👉 Although in development for almost six years, Cardano is still a top cryptocurrency by market value and one of the major blockchain projects.

👉 Cardano’s early emphasis was not on blockchain or DeFi but practical applications. Nonetheless, as the ICO market has cooled, the ecosystem has broadened its long-term goal to include Decentralized Finance.

👉 Cardano’s goal was to build a novel ecosystem that fixed problems that existing cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and others, had. Cardano has been developing more efficient, low-cost, and scalable transaction methods.

👉 To prepare for the introduction of the smart contract and the subsequent operation of decentralized applications (dApps) on the Cardano network, the Cardano team is hard at designing and developing the necessary infrastructure.

👉 Ardana, a platform that combines AMM DEX with stablecoin issuance, has found its greatest natural home in the Cardano ecosystem.

👉 Cardano’s blockchain is the foundation for the stablecoin protocol and decentralized trade assets known as Ardana.

👉 In addition to being able to trade on-chain Cardano native assets, the stablecoin comes equipped with a decentralized exchange that enables capital-efficient transactions between other stablecoins.

👉 Ardana protocol’s goal is to provide a decentralized financial system accessible to everybody, from large financial institutions to small farmers in Ethiopia, by creating an environment that exceeds current norms.

👉 Ardana’s reach will extend well beyond the core procedures that now ensure monetary viability and crop harvesting. It will also function as Cardano’s MakerDAO, allowing it to mint a stablecoin representing the US dollar (dUSD) backed by ADA.

👉 In addition, Ardana has formed strategic alliances with other leading technology corporations and prominent blockchain organizations, including Platonic Systems, Elrond, Liquid, and Coti Network.

👉 Cardino, the ecosystem behind Ardana, announced its intention to release a new stablecoin in partnership with Coti before the end of September.

4. Synthetix

Synthetix

👉 Synthetix is one such initiative using an Ethereum blockchain-based coin. Synthetix is a DeFi project that permits the production of synthetic assets.

👉 These synthetic assets may mirror the price of any other asset, including currencies, stocks, bonds, commodities, and even cryptocurrency.

👉 If it has real-world value, the Synthetix platform will enable the creation of a synthetic asset that tracks the price of that item. Synthetix employs a technique like that of stablecoins to preserve their fixed value instead of a single stablecoin.

👉 However, Synthetix will let anybody create a synthetic asset backed by the SNX token. Unlike the majority of other blockchain projects, it contains two distinct token types:

➡️ Synthetix is the primary token in developing synthetic assets, and its ticker symbol is SNX.

➡️ The Synth is the second kind of token. Again, all synthetic assets developed on the Synthetix platform are shown here.

👉 From the outside, the Synthetix system is basic and uncomplicated. Users must first acquire SNX tokens before storing them in a suitable wallet.

👉 Once the SNX tokens have been secured, they may be used to build Synths that monitor the price of another real-world asset.

5. Polkadot

Polkadot

👉 Polkadot is the native cryptocurrency of the Polkadot platform, a unique blockchain type that facilitates interoperability across several independent blockchains. Interoperability is a long-discussed notion in the blockchain ecosystem, but it has yet to materialize significantly.

👉 Interoperability has been established in smaller, laboratory-based contexts. However, it has not yet been realized and implemented on a large scale.

👉 Polkadot intends to alter this by delivering the world’s first blockchain platform that is highly interoperable. The platform’s native currency is DOT, which fuels the blockchain’s essential activities. Polkadot is comparable to other smart contract systems (such as Ethereum) with two features.

➡️ Sharding is the capacity to have “chains within chains.”

➡️ Interoperability, sometimes known as the capacity for one blockchain to “talk” with another,

👉 DOT is the token that functions as network fuel to ensure that these actions are as frictionless as possible, like how Ether is the driving force behind all smart contracts on Ethereum.

👉 Over the last several years since Polkadot’s original development and Proof of Concept (PoC) design surfaced, the project has proved to be one to keep an eye on, even if it first flew under the radar of crypto enthusiasts and institutional investors.

👉 Since its inception in 2016, Polkadot has amassed a team of industry heavyweights, including developers, architects, and project managers.

👉 In addition, Polkadot developed a well-thought-out plan at an exponential rate, putting it in the top 10 most valuable cryptocurrencies by 2021. It still holds this position at number 10 with a market capitalization of 8.5 billion USD [2022/09/13].

6. Uniswap

Uniswap

👉 When it comes to decentralized cryptocurrency exchanges, Uniswap is a major player. As a result, you may quickly and easily trade cryptocurrency tokens without creating an account.

👉 Through Uniswap’s liquidity pools, cryptocurrency holders could earn interest on their assets. Uniswap is an automated market maker (AMM) and decentralized exchange.

👉 AMMs rely on smart contracts, which are blockchain-based computer algorithms, to determine pricing and conduct deals.

👉 Decentralized Financial Services (DeFi) are made possible by this method. In addition, cryptocurrency trading is made possible by AMMs with large liquidity pools, such as Uniswap.

👉 Liquidity pools are pools of cryptocurrency held in escrow by smart contracts and funded by user contributions. When participants in a cryptocurrency exchange need to make a purchase, they draw from the liquidity pool.

👉 To compensate the liquidity providers in a pool, Uniswap charges a modest fee for each trade (those who have deposited their crypto into the pool).

👉 It is a solution where everyone benefits from all parties involved. It is because of its liquidity sources that Uniswap can provide cryptocurrency trading.

👉 Liquidity providers make money in cryptocurrency by sharing in the exchange’s transaction fees. Simply link your cryptocurrency wallet to Uniswap to get started. Once you have done that, go through the next steps in the transaction:

➡️ Select the cryptocurrency you want to send and receive by clicking the “Swap” button.

➡️ When mining for liquid assets, choose “Pool.” To make a deposit and start a position in any of the two cryptocurrencies, you need to use one of the exchanges that support Uniswap. The most common combinations may be found in the top pools.

➡️ To store your cryptocurrency, you may choose from various wallets. For example, hardware wallets, which store your cryptocurrency offline in cold storage, and digital wallets, which you can get free as an app or browser extension, are both viable options.

👉 You can easily begin using Uniswap after you have a wallet and have moved your cryptocurrency there.

What to Look for in a DeFi Protocol in Kenya

DeFi Protocol

👉 Anyone in the world may use the DeFi market to access a wide variety of Internet-based banking, trading, investing, and other financial services.

👉 However, deploying funds in trading or lending pools to achieve above-average rates is the most popular use case in the developing DeFi business.

👉 While certain DeFi protocols have shown themselves dependable over many years, others may be fraudulent.

👉 Therefore, as a DeFi investor, it is crucial to do extensive due research on the protocol you want to deploy. When deciding on a DeFi protocol, Kenyans might consider a few factors.

Overall Community Size and Support

👉 The success of a DeFi initiative depends heavily on its community. They aid in publicizing the venture, providing financial backing, and participating in the protocol’s design and administration.

👉 A successful project needs a large user base. While a substantial number of individuals subscribing to their Telegram and other social media channels is not always indicative of the project’s success, it is a good indicator of interest.

👉 Additionally, make sure the community is active. Although some projects have sizable Telegram communities, many such groups are made up of automated software rather than actual people.

👉 An active community indicates that the protocol is interesting to users and has a chance to survive long-term.

Total Value Locked (TVL)

👉 Total Value Locked (TVL) is the value of all digital assets included inside a DeFi protocol. It is a standard approach for investors to evaluate rival projects and is one of the most prominent cryptocurrency ecosystem indicators.

👉 TVL will include:

➡️ Liquidity Pools

➡️ Lending

➡️ Staking

Investors and Partners

👉 DeFi protocols may boost their success potential by gaining support from respected venture capital (VC) companies, crypto funds, and other institutional investors.

👉 Seeing prominent VC and crypto investors sponsoring a DeFi technology frequently suggests three things:

➡️ It is safe to assume that they did their homework well before investing.

➡️ The DeFi project may eventually get funding on a significant scale that would allow it to continue development.

➡️ Moreover, the institutional fund’s network will be available to the entrepreneurs, and they will get top-notch coaching.

The Reputation of the Founders

👉 Even though many DeFi initiatives have nameless creators, you should be wary of investing heavily in a decentralized application (DApp) that anybody could manage.

👉 DeFi protocols may benefit from having pioneers with proven credentials and relevant technical knowledge at the helm. That is why established developers are often behind the most successful DeFi applications.

👉 Furthermore, certain DeFi protocols are managed through Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs), where the community sets the project’s direction. However, the developers of the most popular DeFi apps usually have a public online profile.

👉 In the end, you need to research the team’s history and try to discover solutions to problems like:

➡️ What big projects have they previously completed?

➡️ What is the team’s level of experience?

➡️ How knowledgeable is the marketing staff?

➡️ What is the founder(s)’ reputation in the cryptocurrency industry?

👉 Warning signs include an anonymous development team and a lack of an active developer community.

Network Value to Transaction

👉 Several crypto investors examine the Network Value to Transaction (TVT) statistic using market capitalization and transaction volume.

👉 TVT is designed to resemble the price-to-earnings ratio used in conventional finance, and it can be used to compare the fees collected on a protocol to its present worth.

Inflation Rates

👉 The inflation rate is when the number of tokens in circulation increases. For instance, protocols may continuously print new tokens as rewards for participants.

👉 While inflation is not always a bad indicator and might be a beneficial component of a crypto ecosystem, it is crucial to ensure it does not reach an unsustainable level.

Market Capitalization

👉 Market capitalization is the overall market worth of the network, which is computed by multiplying the token price by the number of tokens outstanding.

👉 It is an essential measure for any cryptocurrency project. Moreover, it is a common statistic in both cryptocurrency and conventional finance.

👉 Market capitalization may also serve as a benchmark for cryptocurrencies, such as when cryptocurrency market capitalization surpasses a trillion dollars.

The Platform’s Use Case

👉 During the one-year-long DeFi craze, several projects have developed with no real-world applications. New DeFi staking techniques often provide exceptionally large returns. However, investors must be cautious about the long-term viability of these enterprises.

👉 Conduct a study and attempt to comprehend the risk you are taking proportional to the reward they deliver. Stick with proven and well-known DeFi protocols with real-world use cases, such as Compound, Aave, Uniswap, and PancakeSwap.

The DeFi Protocol’s Audit Report

👉 The code predetermines all protocol operations. For example, the DeFi protocol relies on automated contracts to process all financial dealings.

👉 However, issues will arise if the code is flawed. For example, hackers need to exploit a vulnerability to steal user money.

👉 There is a vast number of vulnerabilities in DeFi. For instance, one of the largest DeFi thefts in 2020 was crypto-criminal stealing almost $25 million from the yield aggregator Harvest Finance. Problems with its pricing feed allowed for the hack to occur.

Centralized versus Decentralized Finance

Centralized versus Decentralized Finance

Centralized Finance

👉 The financial institutions that hold your funds in a centralized system are businesses whose primary objective is to generate profit.

👉 Many intermediaries in the financial system function as go-betweens and collect fees from their clients to facilitate funds transfer. For example, consider a hypothetical credit-card transaction for a gallon of milk.

👉 The merchant submits the charge to an acquiring bank, which then notifies the credit card company of the transaction.

👉 After the network has validated the charge, your bank will be billed. Finally, your bank processes the transaction and communicates its permission to the merchant through the network and the acquiring bank.

👉 Since most retailers charge a fee to accept credit and debit cards, everyone involved in the process gets paid. In addition, using a bank’s services while you are on the road may not even be an option due to safety concerns, and loan applications might take days or weeks to process.

Decentralized Finance

👉 By facilitating monetary transactions between consumers, merchants, and organizations using innovative technology, decentralized finance does away with the need for intermediaries or agents.

👉 P2P financial networks that use state-of-the-art security protocols, network connection, software, and hardware enable this.

👉 Internet-based lending, trading, and borrowing are made possible by software that records and verifies financial activity in distributed financial databases.

👉 A distributed database allows access from several places and functions as a central repository for data contributed by multiple users. It employs a consensus technique to ensure the accuracy of the information stored.

👉 This technology is being used in decentralized financial systems by removing the need for centralized financial institutions. More financial freedom is available through DeFi apps, individual-focused trading services, and digital wallets.

Conclusion

👉 Decentralized Finance might be a new concept to many beginner Kenyans who are just starting to dabble in cryptocurrency. However, there are several large potential use cases that can benefit crypto traders, investors, and those in industries where DeFi is becoming prominent.

👉 However, like with any other investment there are inherent risks, and Kenyans need to identify which DeFi trading platform is suited to their investment objectives and needs, and those that show steady growth and potential for further expansion as the industry develops and gains traction.

FAQ

What is an example of Decentralized Finance in Kenya?

As an alternative to the current centralized financial system, decentralized finance is driven by blockchain and cryptocurrency technologies.

It delivers financial solutions to customers without intermediaries like banks and exchanges. Two such examples are Aave (AAVE) and Synthetix (SNX).

What does DeFi entail in Kenya?

Since it emerged in the financial sector, decentralized finance (DeFi) has been built on trustworthy distributed ledgers, such as those used by cryptocurrencies.

With this strategy, banks and other financial institutions will no longer monopolize the supply of financial services and commodities.

How can Kenyans invest in DeFi?

Kenyans can start by learning more about DeFi and its place in the world. Then, once they have identified a suitable protocol in which to invest, they can create a digital wallet, purchase crypto, and start investing in the protocol of their choice.

How much is DeFi currently worth?

DeFi is worth over 200 billion USD and is expected to increase to 508 billion USD by 2028.

How can Kenyans make money with DeFi?

Like how you could make passive income via staking, you can earn passive revenue with DeFi lending by placing your tokens into an account for a long time.

Thus, when you lend cryptocurrency to a platform, it leases it out to other cryptocurrency borrowers. In exchange for providing liquidity to the platform, you receive interest payments.
